Seafood is a general culinary term for all edible animals that grow in water, regardless of whether the water is fresh or salt. The term can be generally understood to encompass fish, which are vertebrate grilled animals with a bony or cartilege skeleton, and shellfish, which is a general term for soft-bodied or shelled invertebrates, including molluscs, cephalopods, crustaceans, and echinoderms.
Historically, seafood also included aquatic mammals; the practice is now uncommon and is outlawed for many species. See whaling, seal and dolphin.
