Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus), also called northern bluefin tuna and giant bluefin tuna, is a species of tuna. It is one of the most highly prized commercial fish in the ocean, and are heavily targeted for the Japanese seafood market.

Conservation status

Atlantic bluefin tuna are subject to severe overfishing, with stocks dropping by approximately 75% in the last 40 years. A global plan to protect bluefin stocks has not succeeded, but various regional quotas have led to recoveries of some populations. Atlantic bluefin tuna are rated AVOID by all seafood sustainability programs.
