A pan is a broad and shallow metal cooking vessel. It can refer to a number of different types, including:
  • A frying pan, also called skillet, which has a handle is used on a stovetop.
  • A sheet pan, which is flat and usually has a rolled edge, and is used in an oven.
  • A bread pan, or loaf pan, which has high, flat sides and is used to bake leavened breads. One particular type of bread pan called a Pullman loaf pan or Pullman loaf pan has a removable lid.
  • A cake pan, which has low, flat sides and is used to bake leavened cakes, usually in a square or broad rectangle shape
  • A springform pan, which is usually round and has a spring-loaded mechanism to allow the removal of its bottom.
