Cardamom is a spice made from the seed and seedpods of several tropical plants. The most common type, green cardamom, is used in sweet and savory dishes from India to Scandinavia.
Black cardamom is less commonly used, and is only used in savory dishes. If a recipe calls for simply cardamom, green cardamom is what is meant.
