Grains of Paradise (Aframomum melegueta), also called melegueta pepper, alligator pepper, Guinea grains, ossame, and fom wisa, is a spice native to West Africa, which is now used in West, North, and Eastern African cuisines.
The plan is in the ginger family, and is closely related to cardamom. It has a citrusy, black pepper aroma, and is used in stews and to season beers, gins and akvavit.
