Black cardamom, also hill cardamom, Bengal cardamom, greater cardamom, Amomum subulatum, is a plant whose dark brown seed pods are used as a spice. It should not be substituted for the more common green cardamom, and when a recipe calls for cardamom, the green is what is intended.
