Green cardamom or true cardamom, Elettaria cardamomum is a plant in the ginger family native to India, whose seeds are used as the spice cardamom.
Black cardamom, from a related plant, is not the same spice, and is less frequently used. When a recipe calls for cardamom, green cardamom is what is intended.
