Chai is the Hindi and Urdu word for "tea," which has become shorthand in American usage for masala chai, or "mixed-spice tea", a beverage made by boiling black tea with herbs and spices, and often milk. For the ingredients of this spice mixture, see chai spice.
Traditional masala chai is nearly always made with water, black tea, milk, sugar, cardamom, black pepper, and ginger. Many Western chai beverages add more spices and milk to this basic set of ingredients.
