A food additive is anything added to a foodstuff during preparation to enhance flavor, shelf life, or appearance.
Food additives are regulated and have standardized naming systems. The European Union starting a system of names consisting of the letter E and a number, which was later adopted by the Codex Aliminatrius Commission as an international system for all additives.
