Kokum, or coccum, is a spice used in the Goa, Maharashtra, and Kerala region of India. It is the fruit of the Garcinia indica tree, which grows in the rainforests of the Western Ghats of India. It has little odor but is extremely sour with a smoky flavor.
The fruit is also used fresh, sweetened with sugar to create a drink called kokum sarbat or solkadhi, or juiced to make kokum aagul.

Substitutions

If kokum cannot be found, tamarind or tart green mango (amchoor) powder can be substituted.
