Strudel is a layered pastry, originally from Austria but now common across central Europe. It is made with an enriched elastic dough, which is rolled or stretched into a large thin sheet. A filling made of spiced and sweetened fruit, or a savory meat and vegetable blend, is spread on the pastry, which is then rolled up and baked.
The Trentino-Alto Adige region of Italy produces a celebrated strudel using renetta apples, which are extensively cultivated there.
