Amaretti (singular amaretto) are a family of sweet macaron-style cookies from Italy. The term may refer simply to an almond-flavored macaron, but may also refer to Amaretti di Saronno, a bittersweet macaron originally produced in Saronno, in Lombardy.
The term may also refer to any biscotti or meringue-based cookie flavored with almond.
The liqueur, amaretto, has no direct connect to the cookie except that both are flavored with almond.
