Shepherd's pie is a casserole of minced lamb or mutton, seasoned with sauteed onions and gravy, covered with mashed potatoes. It is a traditional and popular British dish that has its origin as a simple meal for country shepherds.
When beef is used in place of lamb, the dish is properly called cottage pie, but many American cooks will use shepherd's pie as the name of a beef-based preparation.
The French version of this dish is Hachis Parmentier, which is often made with ground beef and seasoned with Emmental cheese.
