Perilla (Perilla frutescens), sometimes Korean perilla, is a plant in the mint family that is grown as a crop in southeast Asia, the Korean peninsula, Japan, and India. It is widely used in Korea as an herb and as a namul vegetable, or pickled as kimchi, and the seeds are toasted and ground to make deulkkae-garu or pressed for perilla oil.
In Korean, kkae (깨) refers to both the perilla plant and to either sesame seed or perilla seed. Sesame seed is referred to explicitly as chamkkae (참깨), "true kkae", while perilla seed is called deulkkae (들깨), "wild kkae". This leads to mistranslations of deulkkae as "wild sesame", which is incorrect.
