Sorbet is a frozen dessert made with sugar, water, and a source of flavor such as fruit juice, fruit purée, wine, cocoa, liqueur, or honey.

Name origins

Sorbet is derived from the French sorbet, probably from Italian sorbetto, from Turkish şerbet, from Persian sharbat, all referring to a frozen dessert or beverage. Sharbat is derived from Arabic shariba "to drink". From the 1580s until the 19th century, sorbet probably meant a cool drink of fruit juice and water. The first recorded use of sorbet as a frozen dessert is from 1864.
