Bengal gram is the English name for the darker chickpea (kala chana, desi chana, or simply chana) grown extensively in south Asia. When bengal gram is hulled and split, it is called chana dal.
It is distinct from the larger, lighter chickpea, called kabuli chana or safed chana in India, also called garbanzo bean, which is grown commonly in the United States.
