Sportella is a sweet bread from associated with a courtship ritual on the island of Elba. It is an enriched sweetened bread seasoned with anise and lemon, which is formed into the shape of a phallus. It is offered by a woman to her partner if she is interested in his proposal, as indicated by the gift of a ceremito bread on Palm Sunday.
