The pawpaw (Asimina triloba), also called American papaw or paw paw, is a small tree native to the eastern United States and Canada that produces a large, yellowish-green to brown fruit. The pawpaw is the only temperate-weather member of the custard apple family of fruits, which also includes the soursop and cherimoya.
Pawpaw fruits are sweet, with a custard-like texture, and a flavor somewhat similar to banana, mango, and pineapple. They are commonly eaten raw, but are also used to make ice cream and baked desserts.
Pawpaw fruits are the largest edible fruit indigenous to the United States, if one does not count the gourds in the squash family.
