Cherimoya is the fruit of the Annona cherimola tree. It is a heart-shaped fruit with a curiously scaly green skin and a soft, creamy white interior. The flesh is aromatic and sweet, with flavor that evokes pineapple, pear, papaya, berry, and apple, depending on the season and variety. The interior also contains numerous hard brown-black seeds, each about 2 cm long, which are poisonous if consumed and should be discarded.
Cherimoya is sometimes called "custard apple" or "sugar apple", which are actually the names of close relatives; for more on these, see custard apple family (Annonaceae).
