Nian gao is a Chinese sweet rice cake, sometimes called New Year Sweet Rice Cake (红糖年糕), New Year Cake, or Chinese New Year's Cake. It can be made all year, but it is traditional to enjoy this cake, and to exchange it as a gift, around the Chinese New Year.
There are regional variations in the preparation of the cake, but all are based on glutinous rice.
