A Jamaican patty is a semicircular savory pastry featuring a flaky shell, typically tinted golden yellow with egg yolk or turmeric, and filled with various savory ingredients. The most common filling is seasoned ground beef, but variations include chicken, pork, lamb, fish, shrimp, lobster, vegetables, soy, ackee, and cheese.
The patty originates from Jamaica and is also widely consumed throughout the Caribbean, notably along the Caribbean coasts of Nicaragua, Panama, and Costa Rica. In Jamaica, patties are often eaten as a meal, commonly served with coco bread, and smaller versions, known as cocktail patties, are also popular.
Adaptations outside Jamaica, such as in the United Kingdom, may use suet, margarine, or butter in the pastry and frequently incorporate curry powder with turmeric for coloring. Some non-traditional variants employ low-fat or whole wheat crusts to cater to varied dietary preferences.
