Frosting is a sweet glaze applied to a cake or cookie. In American English usage, the term "frosting" usually refers to a buttercream frosting or a product that simulates buttercream with vegetable shortening, while the term "icing" refers to a simpler glaze of sugar syrup. When frosting is used between layers of a layer cake, it is called filling.
