Crème caramel is a sweet
egg
custard
with a garnish of
caramel sauce
, typically prepared by filling molds with sugar syrup and custard base, baking them together, and inverting the mold for service. Due to this "reverse" technique, the dish is known in French as crème caramel renversée ("reversed caramel cream"). Note that the dish is known as
flan
in much of North America.
