Brewing is the process of extracting flavor- or nutrient-bearing chemicals from a solid, especially a plant solid, through the application of hot water. In this sense, the term is frequently applied to coffee, tea, and soy sauce.
The term "brewing" is also often used to describe the entire process of making beer, which includes a brewing step when starches are steeped in hot water to create a wort prior to fermentation. A facility that produces beer from raw materials is called a brewery.
