Tree nut is a term used to indicate nuts that grow on trees, to distinguish them from nuts that come from other sources, such as legumes. The distinction is important for both culinary and allergy purposes.
Common tree nuts include almonds, walnuts, cashews, hazelnuts, pecans, pistachios, and Brazil nuts.
Non-tree "nuts" include peanuts, which are legumes and grow underground; coconuts, which despite growing on a tree are classified as drupes; and nutmeg, which is a seed from a tree, but is not a true nut.
