Torrijas is a Spanish French toast, often made with rich brioche bread, and sometimes using sweet wine as the soaking liquid rather than dairy. They are frequently associated with Lent and Carnival.
In Asturias they are called "picatostes" and, together with frixuelos, they are a typical sweet of the Antroxu (Carnival) celebrations. In the northern region of Cantabria , they are known as "tostadas" and are made in a similar way to the rest of Spain but are eaten at Christmas instead of Lent. In the Canary Islands they are simply called "slices" and are usually consumed at Carnival.
