Sopa boba (Spanish, "simple soup") refers either to:
  • a simple, light soup in Dominican cuisine
  • historical term originating in medieval Spain for a soup made from the leftover food or scraps distributed as charity by convents to the poor. This soup was also called sopa de peregrinos or brodio. The dish was also served in inns and taverns to those who performed musical or poetic recitations in exchange for food.
Over time, sopa boba became associated with a basic, nutrient-poor soup made from water and food remnants, commonly given to people in institutional settings such as prisons, boarding schools, military barracks, and concentration camps. The phrase "vivir a la sopa boba" emerged from this practice, referring to those who live off others without working. The term brodio later evolved into bodrio, a word used to describe something of poor quality, particularly in artistic or intellectual production.
