Planter's punch is an alcoholic punch, traditionally from the plantation culture of the Southern United States, Caribbean, and countries adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico. Recipes are extremely variable, but typically all include rum and some sort of fresh tropical juice.
The "original recipe" claimed by Baker (1939) is a classic "1, 2, 3, 4" punch of the form:
> 1 of sour ( lime juice ) > 2 of sweet ( sugar or gomme syrup ) > 3 of strong (Jamaica rum ) > 4 of weak (water and ice combined) - and use shaved or quite fine cracked ice, please... > Doctor this with the usual dash of Angostura, shake hard and serve - with ice left in the glass. More modern recipes will frequently use rum, curaƧao, orange juice, lemon juice, grenadine, and pineapple juice. Fruit garnishes of pineapple, orange, and cherry are common.
