Ichijū sansai, lit. Japanese "one soup, three sides," is a phrase describing the core meal construction idea of traditional Japanese cuisine. A meal should contain rice , soup , and at least three dishes containing vegetables, typically consisting of one namasu , one nimono , and one yakimono .
