Blitztorte (or Blitz Torte) is a German-American cake, popular in Milwaukee, Brooklyn, and other US cities with a large German population. Turn-of-the-century blitztortes were basically crumb cakes, from the 1920s forward, the blitztorte was defined by layers of butter cake, custard and meringue, enriched with nuts and cinnamon.
The blitztorte has been described as Wisconsin's unofficial state cake.
