Awa is the Japanese term for foxtail millet (Setaria italica). Historically, it was a substitute grain for rice in poorer Japanese communities. It is a specialty crop now, used to make awa-mochi and awa manju (millet cakes), awadango (millet balls), and awa-ame (millet candy).
