Active dry yeast is a dried, granulated yeast product, in which the yeast cells are alive but dormant.
It is common to "proof" active dry yeast by mixing it with a small amount of warm - not hot - water. After 10 minutes, the yeast should have expanded and the mixture should be bubbly or foamy.
