Tejocote (Nahautl texocotl, "stone fruit") or Mexican hawthorne, is a fruit that is native to Mexico and Guateala. The fruit is similar to a crabapple, with a sweet and sour flavor, and can be eaten raw, cooked, or canned. It is an important ingredient in ponche, a traditional hot holiday punch. It is cooked into a paste and mixed with sugar and chili powder to make rielitos candies.
