Soda bread, also called farl, is a baking soda-leavened bread, which is traditionally associated with Ireland and Scotland. Because it is raised with baking soda, it does not require an extensive rise and can therefore be prepared quickly. Buttermilk is usually added to the recipe, which adds acidity to activate the baking soda and provide a larger lift. Some variations add black currants for sweetness.
