Runner bean (Phaseolus coccineus), also known as gigante bean and scarlet runner bean, is a plant in legume family. They are sometimes called butter beans, which causes confusion with lima beans, which are also called by this name.
In Greece, where they are called fasolia gigantes, these beans have protected status and are a key ingredient in popular dishes such as gigantes plaki.
