Note that Prunus cerasifera is not the same as the cultivated Mirabelle plum, which is sometimes also called "cherry plum"
The cherry plum (Prunus cerasifera), also called myrobalan plum, is a wild plum species native to southeast Europe and western Asia, which is thought to be one of the parents of the cultivated plum, through a cross with the sloe.
They are not widely cultivated for their fruit, though they are used in Georgian cuisine, where they are an ingredient in tkemali sauce, as well as kharcho soup and chakapuli stew. It is also occasionally used in Romanian cuisine.
Note that Prunus vachuschtii, a green species of plum native to the same region, is treated as a different variety; in Georgia it is called alucha.
