A pikelet is a small, lightly sweetened, griddled bread made with a batter of flour, milk, and eggs, leavened with baking powder. They are also known as dropped scones and dropped crumpets in the English Midlands and Scotch pancakes in the south of the United Kingdom.

Where did the name pikelet come from?

The modern word for pikelet is derived from Welsh bara pyglyd, which referred to a dark or sticky bread. This was shortened to pyglyd, and spread to the West Midlands of England, where it was anglicized to picklets and then to pikelets.
