Coconut rum is a flavored alcoholic beverage typically made by infusing rum with coconut flavoring. It is usually a light rum base, either distilled with natural coconut essence or blended with coconut flavor after distillation. Some coconut rums are sweetened, almost to the point of being liqueurs.
One of the most popular coconut rum brands, Malibu Coconut Rum, is bottled at 21% alcohol by volume, making it approximately half as alcoholic as rum spirits. Bacardi Coconut Rum, another brand, is bottled at 35% alcohol by volume, nearly the same as rum.
Coconut rum is a common ingredient in tropical cocktails such as piƱa coladas and mai tais, though the original mai tai recipe does not call for any coconut flavoring.
