Claret is an English-language term for a red wine from the Bordeaux region of France, or more generally for any wine produced in the Bordeaux style. The term captures an obsolete description; in the 15th century, Bordeaux wines were "clear" and pale-colored, almost like a modern rosé. The current dark red style was not produced until the 1700s.
In the Middle Ages, "claret" referred to a heated wine poured over a bag of spices (see hippocras); see Clareit for more.
