A cobbler, in cocktail usage, is a shaken drink with crushed ice, often based on wine or sherry, and garnished with fresh fruit or mint. The original cobbler was a Sherry Cobbler, which gave the name to the entire family of drinks.
A recipe book from 1895 includes recipes for Brandy Cobbler, Sherry Cobbler, Wine Cobbler, Catawba Cobbler, Champagne Cobbler, Claret Cobbler, Port Wine Cobbler, Rhine Wine Cobbler, Sauterne Cobbler, and Whiskey Cobbler.
