Caramel macchiato is a coffee drink, invented by Starbucks in 1996 and and popularized in their coffee shops, which adds a drizzle of caramel syrup to a latte macchiato (steamed milk with espresso).
The drink often leads to confusion for customers who learn coffee vocabulary from Starbucks, because the caramel macchiato is based on a latte macchiato, which is a very different drink than a standard macchiato. A latte macchiato is mostly milk, with a single shot of espresso added after steaming, while a macchiato is an espresso served in a small (3 oz.) glass, "marked" with a small bit of foamed milk.
