Yakgwa (약과) is a traditional Korean confection made from wheat flour, honey, sesame oil, and ginger, often shaped into small, flower-like forms. The name yakgwa translates to "medicinal confection," reflecting its historical use of honey, which was considered a valuable medicinal ingredient in ancient Korea. The dough is shaped, deep-fried, and then soaked in a syrup made of honey, mool yut (malt syrup), and sometimes ginger, giving the treat its distinctive sweetness and sticky texture.
Yakgwa is commonly enjoyed during special occasions, such as holidays and weddings (see more at Chuseok). It has a dense, chewy texture and a rich, honey-infused flavor, making it a popular dessert or snack, often paired with tea.
