The marasca cherry (from Italian amarasca, from amaro, bitter) is a variety of the sour Morello cherry that is cultivated in Croatia, northern Italy, Slovenia, Hungary, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The marasca cherry gives its name to Maraschino liqueur and the candied cherries called Maraschino cherries. True Maraschino liqueur is required to only use marasca cherries in its production. Maraschino cherries in the United States are usually made with Royal Ann cherries, a variety of sweet cherry.
