Live, when applied to food, usually means that an animal (often a fish or shellfish) is kept alive at the place of service until right before it is served to the customer. In rare cases, it may indicate that animals are eaten while still alive; see ikizukuri, san-nakji, drunken shrimp, odori ebi, casu marzu and oysters on the half shell.
