Hard sauce is a sweet dessert sauce made by creaming butter and sugar with rum , brandy , whiskey , or sherry . It is served cold, often with hot desserts such as plum pudding , Christmas pudding , and mince pie . Despite its name, it is closer to a seasoned butter than a typical sauce.
