Gala is an apple cultivar with firm, crisp, juice flesh and sweet and aromatic flavor. Its skin has a pale yellow background with striped red blush. Since 2018, Gala has been the most popular apple cultivar in the United States.
Gala apples were developed in New Zealand in 1934, by J. H. Kidd. They are a cross between the Golden Delicious and Kidd's Orange Red apple varieties. Their original designation is "Kidd's D-8."
