Fruit butter is a fruit product made by slowly cooking fruit purée, often with added sweetener, spices, and citrus, until a soft, spreadable consistency is reached and the sugar caramelizes to create rich deep flavors and darker color. It is called "butter" because of its spreadable nature, but no dairy products are ever used in fruit butter.
The most common fruit butter is apple butter but fruit butters can also be made withpears and Asian pear, stone fruit, pumpkin, or berries.
