Crappie (Pomoxis annularis or Pomoxis nigromaculatus) is a game fish of central and eastern Northern America. They are among the better-tasting freshwater fish, and can be caught with many different angling techniques.

Conservation status

There is no commercial fishing of crappie in North America. Population levels are managed by state fishery agencies and it is generally considered to have healthy stocks.

Word origins

Crappie derives from Canadian French crapet. The Louisianan name, sacalait, does not actually derive from French sac-à-lait, "milk bag", but from Choctaw sakli, meaning "trout".
