Aronia is a genus of berry-bearing shrubs which are native to the Eastern United States and Canada, and are cultivated in Scandinavia, the Baltics, and Russia. Their fruit is known as red chokeberry and black chokeberry, plus a natural hybrid of the two called purple chokeberry. The fruit is quite astringent and is mostly used in cooked applications such as wine, jams, syrups, teas, and candies. It is not to be confused with chokecherry, to which it is not related.
