An alembic is a device used in distilling. It consists of a boiler, topped with a spiral coil. The liquid to be distilled is placed in the boiler and heated, either directly with fire or indirectly by a water bath, and the vapors are condensed in the spiral coil, which may be cooled by flowing water or ice.
